What is Unit Pengambilan Universiti (UPU)?
UPU is known as the gateway to public universities in Malaysia. For post-SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia), STPM or Diploma graduates looking to apply to public universities, community colleges, polytechnics and Institut Latihan Kemahiran Awam (ILKA).
Example of some institutions you can apply to in UPU.
There are many choices of universities, polytechnics, community colleges and Institut Latihan Kemahiran Awam (ILKA) that you can apply to based on what you want to study.
Here is the list of institutions you can refer to!
UNIVERSITIES
1. Research Universities
- Research universities are in charge of aggressively investigating new ideas, testing out innovative approaches and adopting academic initiatives in the pursuit of knowledge acquisition.
- Here are the five universities and examples of courses that you can apply:

2. Comprehensive Universities
- Comprehensive universities are institutions that provide studies in a range of fields of study.

POLYTECHNICS
- A polytechnic is a certificate program or career path where the primary objective of the institution is to provide technical education. Polytechnic programs typically last three years, upon which graduates receive a certificate.
- The programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience they need to enter the workforce directly or to continue their studies in higher education.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE
- When Malaysian community colleges were first founded, its goal was to produce graduates who, when entering the workforce, would not only have academic qualifications but also practical skills and general knowledge.
- At the certificate and diploma levels, courses are provided in the following areas:
- Engineering
- Hospitality and fashion
- Multimedia
- Social service
- Agro-technology
- Business
- In order to improve the quality of people’s lives, these community colleges also provide short-term courses in new skill development, upgrading current skills and re-skilling to members of the local community, including housewives, seniors, NGOs, etc.

Institut Latihan Kemahiran Awam (ILKA)
- The study courses available are for programs at the Certificate and Diploma levels, which are skill-based and relate to certain fields.
- In Malaysia, we have 4 Institut Latihan Kemahiran Awam as listed below:
- Institusi Latihan Kemahiran Belia dan Sukan (ILKBS)
- Institusi Latihan Jabatan Tenaga Manusia (ILJTM)
- Bahagian Latihan Kemahiran Pertanian (BLKP)
- Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA)

- Overall, there are 20 public universities, 36 polytechnic, 105 community colleges and 4 Institusi Latihan Kemahiran Awam (ILKA) that you can search and apply for UPU!
When is UPU open and who can apply?

How to apply and fill up the form?
If you don’t know how to apply, you can follow all these steps below:

- The first step is to create an account (daftar akaun). https://upu.mohe.gov.my/

2. After you click it, you will be directed to this page. Here you will need to fill in all the forms with your information. Please remember your password and click ‘DAFTAR’. .

3. Next, you will be appointed to the login page after your registration is complete. After entering your login information, choose “LEPASAN SPM” or “LEPASAN STPM/SETARAF’ based on your previous education.

4. You will be directed to the main dashboard after logging in. Here, you can see at the left side under the dashboard. On the ‘PERMOHONAN’ screen, click to make an application.

5. Now, fill in your identification number and choose the right category. Select the category that applies to you.
- Category A – Current SPM/STPM year’s candidate
- Category B – Past years’ SPM/STPM candidate
6. Then, don’t forget to click ‘SETERUSNYA’.

7. On this page, you need to fill in your personal information (maklumat peribadi). If possible, we really recommend that you click ‘SIMPAN’ to save what you already filled in before moving onto the next page.
8. Don’t put the wrong information and please double check it.

9. Move to here, you need to fill in your family details. Your father and mother’s information.

10. You will be prompted to put your academic details on this page. You can add items 5 and 6 based on your best achievements.
11. Make sure your academic details are correct before you click ‘SIMPAN’ and ‘SETERUSNYA’.

IMPORTANT NOTICES!
12. You must select a minimum of six options. However, it is advised that you complete each of the above choice slots.
13. We advise you to verify the minimal entrance requirements via UPU’s e-Panduan before submitting an application. Here is the link:

14. You will also need to enter your height and weight if Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) is one of your selections.

15. After you’re done with all the forms and double check it, you can click ‘CETAK’ to print your slip.

16. Now you’re done! You can keep the printed copy to yourself.

Tips to choose the course or program in the UPU

Extra tips to secure your dream course at your chosen university!

What if I didn’t get the UPU? What should I do?
Some students might be worried about this, thus, this is why we prepared what things you should do if this situation happened to you. Follow the instructions provided.
SUBMIT AN APPEAL
- If you were notified by UPU Online that you were not accepted into any of the universities or polytechnics you applied to, you will have ten (10) days from the date of the results to prepare and submit an appeal.
- Applicants who have already received their results and are unwilling to proceed with the given course or program, however, are not allowed to file an appeal.
- Make sure to check again your information that you have already submitted if you need to make changes before submitting the new application/appeal.
- Don’t forget to check again whether you are eligible or not for the course/program that you want to apply for and make sure it is suitable for you.
METHODS TO SUBMIT AN APPEAL
- Only through UPU online may one submit an appeal for Public University (Universiti Awam – UA) and Polytechnic.
Appeals to Institut Latihan Kemahiran Awam (ILKA) and Community Colleges can be sent straight to the relevant institutions, bypassing UPU Online.
